2005 News Announcements
NOTE: This information
may have been superseded by later news releases. These items are listed
here for archive purposes, only.
- Sacramento Weir Opened Early -- The Department of Water Resources
opened 20 gates of the Sacramento Weir on Saturday, December 31, at
8:30 a.m. Originally scheduled for 2 p.m., the gates were opened early
due to heavy rains upstream and higher than expected flows. Depending
upon weather and river conditions, additional gates may be opened later
this weekend.
The Sacramento Weir is a manually operated flood control structure four
miles upstream of Sacramento’s Tower Bridge and about two miles
north of the American River’s confluence of the Sacramento River.
Under U.S. Army Corps of Engineers rules, the weir is opened after the
Sacramento River hits the 27.5 foot stage at Sacramento’s I street
Bridge with a forecast to continue rising. The weir consists of 48 gates
which are removed manually to allow water to spill from the Sacramento
River down the mile-long Sacramento Bypass in West Sacramento into the
larger Yolo Bypass. (12/31/05) Weir Photos: #1,

- Emergency Restriction on Recreational Boating -- The Department
of Boating and Waterways has issued a full restriction on recreational
boating in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta System, effective immediately
through 12 noon, Tuesday, January 3, 2006. No recreational boating is
permitted in the area bound by the City of Sacramento to the north,
City of Pittsburg to the west and City of Tracy to the south. Due to
high water levels, large floating debris may pose a risk of injury to
boaters. Boat traffic also may cause wakes to overtop the levees. The
Department advises law enforcement agencies to provide discretion to
vessel operateros who have no other means of transportation. This order
issued pursuant to subdivision (c) (1) of Section 660 of the Harbors
and Navigation Code and in Title 14, California Code of Regulations
Section 6698.1 et. seq. For additional information see the DBW website,
www.dbw.ca.gov. (12/31/05)
- Sacramento Weir Opening -- The Department of Water Resources
(DWR) today announced it plans to open the Sacramento Weir about 2 p.m.
on Saturday, December 31. News coverage is invited. A DWR flood management
official will be on hand at the West Sacramento viewing point during
the weir opening to provide commentary and perspective. The weir is
located on Old River Road along the west levee (right bank) of the Sacramento
River. From Interstate 80 take the Reed Avenue exit eastbound, and then
turn left on Harbor Boulevard, which becomes Old River Road. The weir
is about one mile upriver (generally north) from that point. Limited
parking is available at the south levee turnout. The Sacramento Weir
is a key structure protecting the City of Sacramento during high flows
on the Sacramento River, diverting flows through the Sacramento Bypass
into the Yolo Bypass for safe passage to the Delta. (12/30/05) more...
